Wearable displays are enabled by the Internet of Things, which has made it possible to develop smart wearable objects that we can interact with at any time of day. In addition to 'wearability', the main characteristics of these devices - typical of objects in the IoT world - are sensors, connectivity, processors, energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, quality and reliability. Unlike other mobile devices with which users interact (tablets, smartphones), wearable displays can be ubiquitous throughout the day and thus their use tends to be high, as they offer a seamless experience that integrates with people's everyday life. Indeed, their goal is precisely to make access to certain data and functionalities easier, faster and more automated.
Due to their versatility, wearable devices are increasingly being used in various fields, including health and medicine, payments, education, fitness, transport, and entertainment (gaming, music). For example, in the area of innovative payments, wearable devices (smartwatches, smartbands) are becoming increasingly popular. Thanks to NFC-enabled chips, they are enabled for payment in physical shops: to pay, one simply has to bring one's device close to the merchant's POS.
Another case concerns health & medicine, where wearable displays are used to collect data on the health and lifestyle of users (e.g. heartbeat, movement, blood glucose levels, blood pressure) and this data can be transmitted to an operations centre which, based on the information collected, can request the patient's hospitalisation, the intervention of a specialist doctor or a remote consultation.
